William Ellison Jr. was born in 1790 in South Carolina, and was a prominent African American slaveholder and businessman in the antebellum South. He was known for being one of the wealthiest African American individuals in the United States during his time and gained his wealth through entrepreneurship and successful business ventures.
Ellison began his career as a cotton gin maker and worked his way up to become a successful planter, slave owner, and manufacturer. He owned a large plantation in South Carolina and had over 60 slaves working for him. He also owned a cotton gin factory, a sawmill, and a blacksmith shop.
Despite being a slaveholder, Ellison was able to gain respect and acceptance from white society due to his wealth and success. He was also able to use his position to help other African Americans in the community by providing jobs and opportunities for advancement.
William Ellison Jr. died in 1861, leaving behind a substantial estate and legacy as a successful African American businessman in the pre-Civil War South.
